This work was inspired by the 1980’s homecoming dress my mother sewed over 35+ years ago. It holds the memories of an American teenager with misguided perceptions of beauty and adulthood. The collaboration with my mother found the two of us arguing over Vogue patterns, taffeta, and the inconsequential size of the bow.
.
The vintage Vogue pattern is in stark contrast to my menopausal RX packaging; both design elements give precise instructions for use with hopeful results. My insecure teenage self understood little about womanhood while my middle-aged self attempts to embrace the insecurities of the natural progression of a decaying body and mind. Despite still fitting into this dress, my body has aged and shifted. This dress remained the same through the years but my body did not. Which one has become more out-of-date and irrelevant? The dress? Or me?
